This Dad Tricked His Buddy Into Wearing a Costume to His Son’s Christening, and We Can’t Stop Laughing

Christenings are pretty predictable: There’s a church service where the baby gets baptized, followed by a celebration with food, dancing and maybe some kids’ activities and games. That’s about it. One dad’s christening for his son, however, got some unexpected entertainment in the form of an oddly dressed guest: his best friend, who was tricked into thinking the christening was a costume party, Scary Mommy reports.

Reddit user Surgas writes, “Three weeks before the party we were hanging out at my place and at some point out of the blue I said: ‘By the way the christening party is gonna be different … It will be a costume party! It came quite sudden … but he just looked at me though a bit suspicious.” Surgas writes that he and his best friend even spent time searching for cool costumes on his iPad and laughed about dressing up as Rocksteady and Bebop from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon. “At this point I was actually sure he had figured out the scam but hey, we had fun … He went home and I did not think more of it,” he writes.

Two weeks later, Surgas says he got a text from his best friend saying he had found the perfect outfit and asked if he had a plastic sword he could borrow. Still, Surgas assumed his friend was just playing along.

Unfortunately for the pal and fortunately for us, the friend didn’t realize the new dad was only joking; he showed up to the venue dressed as a knight, chainmail head dressing and all—much to Surgas’s amusement. “I was literally rolling around the floor laughing when he entered the church!” Surgas writes.

One person who definitely wasn’t amused (aside from the best friend, of course)? His best friend’s girlfriend, who also attended the event. According to Surgas, she was “not proud of the situation,” and kept asking what time they should be going home.

Meanwhile, Surgas’s mom thought his best friend was part of some entertainment for the party and took a photo with the friend.

Showing up to a celebration inappropriately dressed can be embarrassing, but we have to hand it to the best friend for even putting together a costume, sticking through the festivities while being the only one in the room dressed as a knight and having a sense of humor about the whole thing—at least enough to pose for some unforgettable pics.
